In the first 2024 presidential debate, President Donald Trump jokingly suggested that he should send Vice President Kamala Harris a “MAGA hat” after noting her shift on several key policy issues. Trump pointed out that Harris’ positions have evolved since her 2019 presidential campaign, suggesting that she now aligns more closely with his own policies.
“Everything she stood for a few years ago is out the window. She’s moving toward my way of thinking. I was going to send her a MAGA hat,” Trump said, to which Harris responded with a laugh during the debate.
Harris, in a follow-up interview with CNN, pushed back on the notion that she has changed her views. She stated that her commitment to addressing climate change and securing the southern border has remained constant throughout her political career.
The debate, moderated by ABC’s David Muir and Linsey Davis, took place in Philadelphia. Trump frequently pressed Harris on her record as vice president, questioning why she has not accomplished the goals she now promises to achieve.
“Why hasn’t she done it?” Trump asked repeatedly, focusing on issues like immigration and the economy. He criticized Harris for failing to deliver significant results during her time in office.
As both candidates continue their campaigns, it remains to be seen if they will participate in another debate before Election Day, with another potential showdown looming in October.
