Texas Democrat Seeks To ‘Crack Down On Southern Border’

Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) has been one of the few Democrats who has openly criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the southern border. On “CNN News Central” Wednesday, Gonzalez stated that while he believes that Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R-TX) solutions haven’t worked, he believes that the answer lies in processing illegal immigrants away from the border.

“We need to crack down on the southern border and Democrats need to do it,” he said. “And I think there [are] a lot of places where we can create good policy that’s effective and it’s humane. We’re not going to rip children out of mother’s arms and separate families the way President Trump did, but we need to have law and order on the border and we need to have an orderly process for people to migrate into this country. And I’ve been proposing an idea called the Safe Zone[s] Act, which develops zones in Guatemala and Panama and maybe Colombia for migrants to go and [be processed] at that juncture.”

Called H.R. 2946, Gonzalez reintroduced his Safe Zone Act, which would allow the Secretary of State to control, accept, and process immigrants’ applications for admission into the country. The bill would also require that illegal immigrants be provided with temporary housing, food, social workers, medical care, and other resources, while their cases are being reviewed.

Gonzalez, who took office in 2017 as the representative of Texas’ 15th District, was one of the Democrats that supported and wanted to extend former President Trump’s Title 42 to limit illegal immigrants from entering the country. He is also one of the few Democrats that has been pressuring the Biden administration to strengthen its immigration reform plan.

While he agreed with the administration’s setup of processing centers along the southern border, he found issues elsewhere.

In 2021, he called out the plan, calling it “catastrophic,” stating that “tens of thousands” of illegals would be flooding the Texas border. Two years later, Gonzalez was correct. The southern border has currently broken records on the number of illegals showing up daily, causing strain on Border Control.
