Senator-Elect Dave McCormick Defies Schumer’s Effort To Block Orientation

Senator-elect Dave McCormick plans to attend Senate orientation this week, despite Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s refusal to invite him. McCormick, a Republican from Pennsylvania, was declared the winner of the contentious Senate race on November 7, yet Schumer claims the results remain unresolved.

McCormick, undeterred, is traveling to Washington to participate in the orientation sessions. “Dave McCormick is the new senator for Pennsylvania,” said Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD). “The idea that Schumer would not allow him to participate in Senate orientation is beyond unacceptable.”

The Associated Press called the race in McCormick’s favor after he secured a lead of over 30,000 votes. However, Schumer insists that more than 100,000 ballots remain uncounted and has refused to acknowledge McCormick’s victory. Outgoing Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) has also refused to concede.

Republican leaders have criticized Schumer’s stance as an attack on democratic norms. “Schumer and Senate Democrats are denying the election results,” said Senate Republican conference Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY). He added that blocking McCormick’s participation is an “outrage” and called on Casey to concede immediately.

NRSC Chairman Steve Daines (R-MT) also expressed frustration, writing on X, “Denying legit election results & blocking @DaveMcCormickPA from participating in Sen. orientation this week is outrageous & a disservice [to] PA & the country.”

McCormick’s determination to attend the orientation reflects confidence in his victory and the Republican majority set to take control of the Senate in January. Meanwhile, Schumer’s refusal to recognize the election results has further heightened partisan tensions as the GOP prepares to govern in the upper chamber.
