The San Francisco Elections Commission took the ridiculous step Wednesday of swearing in a woman who is not legally able to vote in the U.S. Despite this, Hong Kong immigrant Kelly Wong will shape policy for American voters.
Wong is believed to be the first noncitizen appointed to the election commission, which is hardly surprising.
It was 2020 when city residents passed a new law stripping the citizenship requirement from those seeking to serve on city boards and commissions. This opened the door for Wong’s appointment.
The San Francisco Election Commission appoints the seven members of the board. Each is chosen by a different commissioner, including the mayor and district attorney.
Wong’s appointment was unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors.
This is Kelly Wong.
She is not an American citizen. She cannot legally vote in this country.
She is now on the San Francisco Elections Commission.

President Aaron Peskin said he is “very impressed by her commitment to enfranchising people who rarely vote, to educating people about the voting process, and to bring in noncitizens and get them the tools they need as they become citizens.”
Despite not being able to legally vote, Wong said her appointment should inspire other noncitizens.
She came to the U.S. in 2019 in pursuit of a graduate degree and is currently an immigrant rights advocate. Dozens of people attended her swearing-in ceremony, which was conducted by Peskin.
Wong told KQED that she had much to overcome to get her position. “There are always voices inside my head. Like, ‘You can’t do it. You’re not competent. You’re an immigrant. This is not your country.’ That’s not true. If I can do it, you can do it.”
She further told the outlet that it is important to educate immigrants who do not speak English on their right to vote.
Wong even touched on the need for “political education” of these immigrants who have little English proficiency. She said this voter outreach would need to maintain “neutrality and impartiality in elections.”
That is difficult to imagine in 2024 San Francisco.
Political education would be equivalent to left-wing indoctrination. Democrats see newcomers as new voters to bring into the fold, and getting them to vote for leftist politicians and causes is obviously their scheme to keep power in the future.
