Ron DeSantis Moves To Undermine Byron Donalds While Promoting His Wife For Governor

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who put his own state on hold to challenge President Donald Trump in 2024, is attempting to block Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) from running for governor while simultaneously boosting his wife as a potential candidate.

During a press conference, DeSantis said Donalds should be focused on his congressional duties rather than eyeing the governor’s office. “I want these congressmen focused on enacting [Trump’s] agenda,” DeSantis said, arguing that Donalds has not contributed to the conservative victories Florida has achieved.

The timing of DeSantis’ remarks is notable, as they come shortly after Trump endorsed Donalds for governor, calling him a “great and powerful” leader who would continue Florida’s conservative direction. DeSantis, who has had an ongoing feud with Trump since his failed presidential run, has not backed Donalds and has instead been publicly praising his wife as a strong candidate for governor.

At the same press conference, DeSantis praised Casey DeSantis’ conservative credentials, stating that she has the “intestinal fortitude” to build on his administration’s work. His comments suggest that he may be positioning her for a run, raising questions about whether his objections to Donalds’ candidacy are more about his own political ambitions than about Florida’s future.

The clash highlights the lingering divide between Trump and DeSantis. Despite losing the Republican primary in 2024, DeSantis continues to assert his influence in Florida politics. Trump allies, however, are pushing back. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) criticized DeSantis for turning against Donalds, reminding him that Donalds was instrumental in his 2018 election.

Donalds has not formally announced his candidacy but told supporters to “stay tuned,” indicating a decision may be coming soon. Meanwhile, Trump has doubled down on his endorsement, making it clear that he believes Donalds is the right choice to lead Florida after DeSantis.
