NYC Neighborhood Besieged By Homeless And Migrant Squatters In Abandoned Rite Aid

In New York City’s Astoria neighborhood, an abandoned Rite Aid building has become a refuge for homeless individuals, drug users and migrants, creating a hazardous environment for local residents. The building, located at 47-07 Broadway, spans 25,058 square feet and has been taken over by middle-aged men, many of whom do not speak English.

The roof of the former store is now littered with various items, including U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rican flags, bicycles, trash, and makeshift furniture. One resident, who chose to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, described the chaotic scene as having a “Mad Max” feel.

Neighbors have reported numerous incidents of public intoxication, drug deals, and urination. During an encounter with New York Post reporters, one man brandished an eight-inch knife, and another reached for what appeared to be a loose table leg.

The building is situated near William Cullen Bryant High School, increasing community concerns. Reporters observed a man urinating in front of a group of teenagers, adding to the list of safety issues. A long-time resident called the situation “absurd and dangerous,” highlighting the risks posed by children playing on a nearby pile of wood with exposed nails.

Since the start of 2024, the city’s non-emergency number has received 163 complaints about the site. These include 69 reports of an active homeless encampment, 36 complaints about public drinking, and 11 reports of public urination. City officials responded to inquiries by stating the site was cleaned up on June 8 and that services were offered to the men occupying the building, but residents remain skeptical about any real improvement.

One neighbor expressed frustration, noting, “There’s always a drunk passed out here — ambulance, every other day here to pick one or two up.” The frequent need for emergency services has placed a strain on city resources, raising concerns about the availability of these services for other emergencies.

The community continues to call for more decisive action from the city to address the ongoing problems. Residents are urging officials to secure the property and remove the squatters to restore safety and order to their neighborhood. The current situation remains a significant concern for locals, who are forced to navigate the dangerous and unsanitary conditions daily.
