Number Of Chinese Nationals Crossing Border Spikes

Chinese nationals immigrating illegally across the U.S. southern border continue to mark new record highs, according to data out earlier this month from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The Border Patrol reported 4,767 encounters with illegal immigrants of Chinese origin at the border with Mexico in November. According to the federal data, the total for the month was higher than any month from 2007 through 2019.

According to the CBP data, Border Patrol encountered 24,000 Chinese illegal immigrants crossing from Mexico in fiscal year 2023. That figure was 1,970 in fiscal year 2022 and 323 in fiscal year 2021, while former President Donald Trump still held office and immediately after the peaceful transition of the White House to Democrat President Joe Biden in Jan. 2021.

“Right now in China, there’s extreme pessimism, especially among people in their 20s about the future of their country, so it’s understandable that they’re leaving and they’re trying to get into the United States,” says China expert Gordan Chang. “And, you know, these are people who are relatively middle class, so it shows you the problems in Chinese society are severe.”

Earlier in December, NewsNation’s Jorge Venture shot video footage of a large group of well-dressed Chinese migrants with nice-looking luggage as they surrendered to the U.S. Border Patrol after crossing illegally into California from Mexico.

“It is extraordinarily dangerous because, first of all, as you point out, we have people from China coming here,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) warned in an interview on Fox News this month. “We also have people on the known terrorist watch list who are coming across the border. And so there’s extraordinary dangers, calls to our country by Biden’s open border policies.”

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) said in June that some of the illegal immigrants from China have ties to the ruling Chinese Communist Party and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

“In terms of the verification that the individuals released into the United States have ties to the PLA came from a sector chief and I’ll leave it with that at this point. We have a classified briefing coming up in the very near future,” Green said.
