An alleged intruder was shot and killed early Tuesday morning in Albuquerque, New Mexico, by a homeowner who defended their residence from the uninvited guest. Bernalillo County deputies responded to the scene around 3:45 a.m. after receiving a call about the break-in at a home located near Lost Horizon Drive.
When deputies arrived, they found the suspected intruder critically wounded. Despite life-saving efforts, the suspect was later pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. Authorities say detectives from the violent crimes and homicide division are investigating the shooting.
The homeowner, who has not been named, reportedly shot the intruder in self-defense. Social media responses to the incident have overwhelmingly supported the homeowner’s actions, with many highlighting the importance of protecting oneself and one’s property.
Residents of Albuquerque, a city experiencing rising crime, were quick to voice their frustrations. “By the time police show up — if they show up — it’s too late,” one commenter wrote. Others pointed to lenient policies that they feel allow criminals to re-offend too easily. “Criminals get arrested and released, only to do it again,” said another commenter.
Many supporters of the homeowner referenced gun rights, particularly the 2nd Amendment, as being crucial in situations like this. “Good job! That’s why we have the 2nd Amendment,” one person wrote in response to the news. With crime on the rise, many see incidents like this as a reason to continue defending gun rights and self-defense.
The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the shooting.
