Iowa Woman Arrested For Making False 911 Call To Avoid Date

An 18-year-old woman from North Liberty, Iowa, was arrested after allegedly making a false 911 call to avoid meeting a date. Sumaya Thomas reportedly called police just after midnight on June 16, claiming her ex-boyfriend was threatening her with violence, according to KCRG News.

Thomas told authorities her ex-boyfriend was threatening to punch, kick, hit, and stab her, and also claimed she was pregnant with his child. Responding officers arrived at the scene and encountered a man leaving, who told police he had met Thomas a week earlier on a dating app. The man, who remained unnamed, was detained for over an hour due to the serious accusations against him.

The man showed officers text messages exchanged with Thomas, which corroborated his story and led the police to question the validity of Thomas’ claims. While Thomas initially maintained that she had known the man for two years and that he had abused her in the past, her story began to unravel during further questioning.

After a third interview with police, Thomas admitted that her accusations were false. She confessed that she felt nervous about meeting the man in person and decided she no longer wanted to go on the date, leading her to make the false report to avoid the meeting.

Thomas was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of making a False Report to 911 and two counts of False Report of an Indictable Offense to a Public Entity. The North Liberty Police Department has not yet provided additional comments on the case.
