Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has urged Congress to leverage its financial oversight capabilities to hold the Secret Service accountable for security lapses following an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump. Greene’s comments come in the wake of a troubling incident at a rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania, on July 13, where two people were injured, and one person was killed.
“We have the power of the purse, and we can hold [the] Secret Service accountable with funding,” Greene said on the “Just the News, No Noise” TV show, emphasizing the role of Congress in ensuring proper security measures are maintained.
The attack on Trump has led to increased scrutiny of the Secret Service’s performance. Despite recent hearings held by the House, substantial information regarding the security failures has been lacking. The hearings were followed by the resignation of former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who appeared before the House Oversight Committee.
One of the major concerns highlighted was the absence of a Secret Service agent on the building used by the shooter, attributed to the building’s sloped roof. Additionally, there were significant communication breakdowns between local police and the Secret Service, raising questions about coordination and preparedness.
“All of these things are evidential proof that there was something more than just a deranged gunman set on killing President Trump,” Greene commented.
Greene also expressed her support for the formation of a task force with subpoena power to further investigate the incident and uncover more details about the security shortcomings.
As Congress evaluates potential actions, Greene’s insistence on accountability underscores the importance of rigorous oversight of the Secret Service to prevent future security breaches and ensure the safety of high-profile individuals.
