A newly formed government task force, led by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has uncovered nearly $2 billion that was unaccounted for during the Biden administration. The funds, originally tied to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), have now been recovered and returned to the U.S. Treasury.
The discovery follows an internal review launched by HUD Secretary Scott Turner, who formed a dedicated task force within his department to root out inefficiencies. Turner collaborated with DOGE to locate and reallocate the missing funds, which had been earmarked for financial services but were “no longer needed.”

The revelation has sparked frustration among officials, as critics question how such a large sum could have been mishandled. A DOGE statement described the issue as the result of a “broken process” during the Biden administration, suggesting that waste and mismanagement had led to billions in taxpayer dollars being unaccounted for.
HUD’s investigation is expected to continue, with further audits potentially uncovering more lost funds. DOGE, which has been active across multiple agencies, has also scrutinized expenditures at the Environmental Protection Agency, where millions in wasteful grants were identified and canceled.
