Denmark Accelerates Military Expansion Amid Growing Security Concerns

Denmark is taking steps to strengthen its military as European leaders warn of increasing threats from Russia. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen revealed that her government is preparing a large-scale defense expansion to ensure national security and maintain stability in the region.

Speaking before parliament, Frederiksen emphasized the need for urgent action, describing the situation as the most dangerous in modern history. She warned that Russia poses a serious risk to Europe and insisted that Denmark must take immediate steps to bolster its defenses.

Although Frederiksen did not disclose specific numbers, reports indicate that the government will establish a 50-billion-kroner ($7 billion) defense fund for 2025-2026. The initial plan considered doubling the amount, but officials determined that acquiring additional military equipment would be challenging due to limited supply.

One of the top priorities for Denmark’s military is the purchase of air defense systems, which the country does not currently possess. Danish public broadcaster DR reported that this capability is high on the government’s list of immediate needs.

If the defense budget increase is approved, Denmark’s military spending will rise to 3% of GDP, surpassing NATO’s 2% target. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has urged NATO allies to increase their spending to 5% of GDP. The U.S. currently allocates about 3.4% to defense.

Denmark has been a key ally of Ukraine, committing approximately $7.52 billion in military support and $741 million in civilian aid since Russia’s invasion in 2022, according to the Danish foreign ministry.
