Christians Hunted In Syria As New Government Targets Religious Minorities

Christian and Alawite civilians in Syria are facing mass executions under the country’s new Islamist government. Reports confirm that more than 1,800 people have been killed in recent days, with many victims still unaccounted for. The targeted killings have left entire communities destroyed.

The crisis began after Bashar al-Assad was forced to flee to Russia in December, following the takeover by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a group with direct ties to Al Qaeda. By late January, Ahmed al-Sharaa was declared Syria’s interim president. While the new leadership initially claimed it would respect all religious communities, recent massacres suggest otherwise.

In Latakia and surrounding areas, Christian villages have been stormed by armed militants. Survivors describe executions of men, women and children, with churches looted and burned. Some who managed to escape have sought shelter in the mountains, but most are still trapped.

Despite widespread evidence of religious persecution, world leaders have largely ignored the crisis. The United Nations condemned “violence against civilians” but failed to acknowledge the deliberate targeting of Christians. Western media has avoided highlighting the sectarian aspect of the killings, framing the conflict as general political unrest.

Israel, despite warnings about the dangers of an Islamist-controlled Syria, has not responded to calls for military aid. Although Israeli officials have spoken about the threat of jihadist forces in the region, no efforts have been made to protect Christian communities from the ongoing massacres.

The number of dead continues to climb as Islamist forces expand their control. Christian leaders in Syria are calling for urgent help, but so far, their pleas have gone unanswered.
