In a troubling case that has shaken Chicago’s Jewish community, authorities have charged an illegal immigrant with the shooting of a Jewish man on his way to synagogue. The suspect, Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, a Mauritanian national, reportedly entered the U.S. illegally last year, was processed in San Diego, and released shortly after.
The incident occurred Saturday morning when Abdallahi allegedly shot the 39-year-old victim before returning and firing again at police and bystanders. Video footage captured him shouting “Allahu Akbar” during the attack, which many feel shows evidence of a possible hate crime. However, prosecutors have not filed hate crime charges, prompting community leaders to demand tougher prosecution.

Chicago Alderman Debra Silverstein expressed disappointment over the absence of hate crime charges, urging the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office to pursue the case vigorously. Abdallahi has been charged with 14 felonies, including six counts of attempted murder.
This incident highlights the challenges at the southern border. More than 15,000 Mauritanians entered the U.S. last year, many using social media to navigate routes. Recent data also revealed that over 250 immigrants flagged on the terror watch list entered the U.S. under current policies.
The Chicago community is questioning how Abdallahi remained in the U.S. unchecked, especially given his violent actions. Many residents now hope this incident will lead to a reevaluation of immigration policies to ensure greater public safety.
