Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has announced plans to enhance border enforcement following discussions with President-elect Donald Trump. The meeting, held at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, focused on curbing illegal immigration and stopping the flow of drugs into the United States.
Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who joined Trudeau at the meeting, revealed that Canada is preparing to allocate new resources to border security. These measures include adding drones, helicopters and more staff. LeBlanc noted that these changes aim to address US concerns over border issues.
Trump has expressed frustration with Canada and Mexico, stating that he will implement a 25% tariff on all imports from both countries if action is not taken. On Truth Social, Trump said this measure would remain in place until illegal immigration and drug smuggling are stopped.
LeBlanc described the meeting as productive, emphasizing the mutual respect between the two leaders. He also held a separate discussion with Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for Commerce Secretary, to address trade policies and enforcement strategies.
Trudeau’s administration is working to balance its border security approach with the demands from Washington. The government’s upcoming measures aim to provide a clear response to Trump’s warnings while maintaining Canada’s sovereignty.
Trump praised Trudeau for his willingness to cooperate, calling the meeting “very productive.” The next steps by the Canadian government will signal how effectively it can navigate this issue under growing US pressure.
