Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) is leading an effort to pressure Big Tech companies into intensifying their censorship practices ahead of the 2024 election. In a letter co-signed by seven other Democrat lawmakers, Schiff demanded that platforms like Meta, X and Google reinstate more aggressive content moderation policies, which they fear have been relaxed in recent months.
Specifically, the letter criticized the platforms for allowing President Donald Trump to return to social media and for removing bans on discussions about election fraud. Schiff’s group is urging these companies to adopt permanent censorship policies for what they call “misinformation and disinformation” and keep those policies in place indefinitely.
The lawmakers also suggested that Big Tech companies share information with Congress about their censorship activities, raising concerns about government involvement in regulating online speech. Critics argue that Schiff’s call for censorship threatens free speech and could unfairly target political opponents, particularly conservative voices.
Schiff’s push has been met with significant backlash from those who believe it undermines the First Amendment and seeks to stifle political debate ahead of a major election.
