Abbott Signs Bill Criminalizing Illegal Immigrant Entry Into Texas

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) recently signed a bill into law making it a state crime for illegal aliens to enter the Lone Star State.

The legislation, dubbed Senate Bill 4, was signed into law during a ceremony at the southern border in Brownsville, Texas. Among those in attendance for the implementation of such a law were Texas Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick (R) and National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd.

“Today in Brownsville, I signed three new laws to better protect Texans AND Americans from Biden’s open border policies,” Abbott wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Illegal entry into Texas is now a crime subject to removal or imprisonment.”

“Texas will also fund new wall construction & increase human smuggling penalties,” the Texas governor added.

The new law makes it a criminal offense to illegally enter Texas from a foreign country, which millions have done under President Joe Biden. Individuals who illegally re-enter the Lone Star State would face prison sentences of up to 20 years.

The law also allows state law enforcement to deport illegal immigrants back to their respective countries. It protects Texas officials, state employees, and government contractors from lawsuits targeting the new law.

As part of the new law, illegal immigrants can cooperate with law enforcement by agreeing to return to the country they came from, a process called Stipulated Deportation.

Regarding the new law, Mexican President Manuel López Obrador called it “inhumane” and warned that his government would soon challenge the measure in court.

Abbot’s signing of the legislation comes as millions of illegal immigrants have flooded Texas under Biden, given the president’s lax border policies.

Texas has been forced to deal with the southern border crisis. State officials recently implemented measures to install barbed wire across the border to reduce the number of illegal immigrants crossing into the Lone Star State.

The Biden administration challenged such a practice in court, but its efforts proved futile.

Biden’s refusal to tackle the illegal immigration crisis has obligated Texas to combat the issue firsthand. In 2021, the state launched Operation Lone Star, an initiative that involves deploying Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Troopers and Texas Army National Guard soldiers to the southern border.
