A Career Cut Short
Julian McMahon, the charismatic Australian actor who captivated audiences with his intense portrayals of complex characters, has died at the age of 56. His death, which came after a private battle with cancer, was confirmed by his family.
The son of former Australian Prime Minister Sir Billy McMahon, Julian carved his own path to fame, first in Australian soaps like “Home and Away” before making his way to Hollywood.
From “Charmed” to “Nip/Tuck”
McMahon became a household name in the U.S. with his role as the half-demon Cole Turner on the popular series “Charmed” from 2000 to 2005. He followed that with what many consider his signature role: the brilliant but deeply flawed plastic surgeon Dr. Christian Troy on the provocative FX drama “Nip/Tuck.” His performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination in 2005.
“Warner Bros. Television mourns the loss of our friend Julian McMahon,” the studio behind “Nip/Tuck” said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and fans.”
A Villain on the Big Screen and Beyond
On the big screen, McMahon was most famous for his portrayal of the iconic Marvel supervillain Dr. Doom in the 2005 film “Fantastic Four” and its 2007 sequel. More recently, he starred as the lead agent Jess LaCroix on the CBS crime drama “FBI: Most Wanted” until his departure from the show in 2022.
“What shocking news,” legendary producer Dick Wolf said in a statement reported by Variety. “All of us at Wolf Entertainment are deeply saddened by Julian’s passing, and our condolences go out to his entire family.”
As detailed by The Hollywood Reporter, McMahon’s long and varied career showcased his immense talent and versatility. He is survived by his wife, Kelly Paniagua, and his daughter, Madison.
